Neptun has one big advantage: it’s close to everything. In under an hour you can be in Mangalia, Vama Veche, Constanța or at some of the most remarkable historic sites in Dobrogea. If you fancy a break from the beach, here are 10 day trips we recommend, starting from Hotel Recif.
1. Comorova Forest — a few steps from the hotel
The nature reserve between Neptun and Jupiter is the closest patch of nature: shade, quiet and fresh air. Perfect for an early-morning walk or a bike ride.

2. Mangalia — the ancient city of Callatis
A few kilometres south, Mangalia combines history and the sea: the Callatis Archaeology Museum, the ruins of the ancient Greek city, the 16th-century Esmahan Sultan Mosque, the promenade and the marina, where boat trips leave in summer.
3. Mangalia Stud Farm
One of the best outings for children and adults alike: the stud farm’s horses, horse riding or carriage rides, depending on the schedule. Check the opening times before you go.
4. Vama Veche and 2 Mai
About half an hour’s drive away, these two villages by the Bulgarian border have a special, bohemian atmosphere. They’re worth a walk on the beach, a sunset and an evening that feels different from the rest of your holiday.
5. Constanța — the old town and the promenade
About 40 km away, Constanța — ancient Tomis, where the Roman poet Ovid lived in exile — has an old centre full of history: the Art Nouveau Casino on the seafront, the National History and Archaeology Museum with the Roman Mosaic Building, the Genoese lighthouse and Tomis marina.
6. The dolphinarium, aquarium and planetarium in Constanța
The Natural Sciences Museum Complex in Constanța is probably the most popular day out for children on the coast. Go in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds.
7. Techirghiol — the lake with healing mud
Lake Techirghiol is famous for its sapropelic mud, used for generations for therapeutic treatments. An interesting stop, especially for seniors, less than an hour from Neptun.
8. Murfatlar Winery — Dobrogea wine tasting
The Murfatlar vineyards are among the best known in Romania. A winery visit with a tasting is a good idea for an afternoon for two or for a group of friends (with a driver who skips the tasting, of course).
9. Adamclisi — Tropaeum Traiani
The triumphal monument built by Emperor Trajan after the conquest of Dacia is one of Romania’s most impressive history lessons. The drive takes a little over an hour; combine the visit with the museum next to the monument.
10. An afternoon by the lakes in Neptun
Sometimes the best trip is right in the resort: a stroll along the paths around the lakes, a pedalo or rowing boat ride, followed by an evening at the amusement park.
